Palestine in Bengal

Some years ago, I was taking a train ride in Bengal, going from Kolkata to Bolpur.

In recent years, roads have improved, greatly cutting down driving time between those two cities. Also, cars on rent, including driver, is common these days. So, often end up renting a car while in Bengal. However, this was one of the occasions when I did not have a car. Thinking about it, I would have liked to own a good bicycle while in Santiniketan, which would keep me mobile and healthy. A scooter is also good, but not worth owning it if we only visit once in many years.

Anyhow, this specific time, I was traveling by train - not a bad way to go if you wish to meet up fellow travelers and get their feelings. On this occasion, I had my mother with me, and on the trip she was speaking with another resident of Santiniketan. I was taking pictures out of the window and into the compartment, and listening to the general conversation.

On the other side of the central aisle, there were a few Bengali youths, from suburban Calcutta, who were going a few stops only and not all the way to Bolpur. They were loud in their discussion, but not disrespectful of others. I actually liked some of their topics of discussion, which included state level politics, the so called degradation of the global environment and who was responsible for it. They discussed CPM government. I could guess that the feelings of these youths were no more about blind support of the communist regime, but same time, a lot of apprehension and suspicion of western influence on India and the power of the corporations. They were all worried about getting a job. They did not talk about work ethics, discipline and the virtue of working hard - something that I often felt was an issue that should be addressed. Anyhow, I did smile at some of their comments, and even joined in and offered my comments here and there. I was pleasantly surprised to note that they actually welcomed my participation. Clearly, I did not live in India - they had figured it out and also heard by mother speak about me to her friend. Somehow, my opinion seemed important enough for them.

Their talk moved on to street protests in Calcutta - something to do with rising price of things. They laughed about some of the police being pelted by stones and the police rounding up some innocent bystanders, while some of the real miscreants got away. In the process, the boys described one youngster, who was not present in the train, as a “palestine” boy, in Bengali. I had not come across the term. The boy they were speaking about had a Bengali name, was clearly a boy of the neighborhood, and had no ancestry in Palestine. He was not an Arab nor a Muslim. The term Palestine was not used as a Geographic location. The boy was not called Palestinian. Rather, the term was used as an adjective.

Eventually I figured it out. A ‘palestine’ boy, in Bengali, for these kids, meant a boy that was brave, was daring, stood up for his rights, was not afraid to face up to big opponents. It was an admirable adjective, betting local a local hero.

I found it amusing, and worthy of introspection. Here was a part of the world where folks were not Arab, not Muslim, and far removed from the Arab-Israeli conflict. But, television and international news had brought the world closer to home, and in the process, it was the stone pelting youths of Palestine that these unemployed kids of Bengal identified with.

It was almost like a David and Goliath story, but in reverse. Here David was not a poor Jewish village boy. Instead, it was a poor Palestinian kid, standing up to the Israeli tanks and armored cars. The Israeli army had turned into Goliaths. And the story had permeated through layers of linguistic, ethnic, cultural and civilizational barriers and reach remote corners of Bengal, where a brave boy taking on the state apparatus protesting rising food prices or their inability to get a good job. Identifying with the proverbial David, he begins to identify a brave brothers as ‘palestine’ boy. The exact term used, which kept ringing in my year, was ‘সে ছেলে প্যালেস্টাইন ছেলে’ or, ‘that boy is a palestine boy’.

In a way, David and Goliath had turned Bengali, and Palestine had arrived into the heartland of Bengali street culture.

Today, with the recent application by Palestine to the UN for recognition and statehood, and the intense backdoor horse trading by the US on behalf of Israel to prevent it, was the trigger that tweaked my memory about the incidence on the train in Bengal some years ago. This shows how the US-Israel axis is slowly losing ground on the ground globally - some of it in strange ways, such as these young kids of Kolkata, who find heroism and fighting the justice in the actions of Palestinian youngsters wanting freedom from oppression, and their underdog status naturally attracts sympathy, whereas the Israeli juggernaut and its US ally is considered the Goliaths of today.

Perhaps I should take a few more train journeys this time in India. Another way of keeping in touch with the land.

Should I be writing a novel ?

I have thought about it some.
Should I consider writing a novel, or a book or some sort?

I have contemplated writing something, in the form of a book, for some time now. And the idea is not just my own. I have also been told, by a few well wishers and friends, that I might consider putting my thoughts down on paper but in a more organized way, instead of disjointed emails, posts, comments, blogs, podcasts, bulletin board articles and so on. There are enough of them around already.

Apart from that, I also got involved in designing a book of poems by some of us, in Bengali, originally conceptualized to be printed this year 2011 or the next, sort of in celebration of Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary. The poems have nothing directly to do with Tagore. But, indirectly, anybody writing in Bengali, or even thinking in that language, likely borrows something from Tagore, since his contribution to the evolution of the language was so deep. And yes, the book of poems were mostly to be in Bengali, but not exclusively so. As it happens, I myself contributed by far the largest number of poems, which we called ছড়া (Chhorha).

But, designing the book is no mean task, and I have had not much help in it. To me the book should be visually extremely appealing. This means, it should have colors, pictures, sketches as well as text. Also, most of it should be original. So, I used some designs (আলপনা) made by my mother, as well as sketches I myself made of people and things. Even page numbers could not be just plain numbers - they had to be different. But, alas, designing such books take enormous effort and time. So, till now, the book is no more than a quarter ready. Also, I am short of poems. I need a hundred or two more. Friends are not coming forth with much poems any more, and I myself am not a prolific poet as such. So, I am tinkering with idea of augmenting the poems with some writings. In Bengali, in English - whatever. Perhaps even this blog will find itself in the book.

Another thing - who will print it ? I already had an idea that I was not going to go begging publishers. Rather, I would go and print a few copies myself, of high quality print and binding. Within my own capacity, I would print perhaps four or five copies and leave a few with this or that person or organization. That’s it. Being out of circulation, these would likely never gain much circulation or fame - but on the other hand, if they were any good, they’d be a collectors item.

But that’s not the subject of this writing. I am asked by folks to write a novel or a collection of essays and such.
And this blog is about that. The point is - should I ? Can I?

What should I write about ?
I once thought of writing a sort of an autobiographical novel. Or a novel that loosely follows my own lifetime. This should be relatively easy and require less imagination, because it is like writing what I already know happened, more or less, with a bit of tweaking here and there, to turn it into what one hopes would be an interesting story for readers.

But, the story must have a sort of an identifying character or description, or category. Should it be a sort of a romance novel? No way. I know for sure, that I shall never be able to write a good romance, because, well, because I cannot think that way. But, that does not mean there shouldn’t be love or a romantic angle in the story. Everyone, even myself, should be able to handle that.

But then, what should be the category? Autobiography ? Nope. A travel document ? I have been around the world. But, no - I am not ready to write travel documents, though my writing could easily include various locations on the planet.

So, should it be a thriller ? a detective novel ? A murder who-done-it ?
Nahh .. I am not into those, although I have read my share of Agatha Christie.

Historical novel ? Tempting, but I am not qualified enough. I have toyed with the notion of a man from India arriving at the North American shores fifty or a hundred years ago - more like a period novel. This is one option that is worth considering, perhaps. But its sale value is doubtful. But then, I have my own ideas about sale. Future of books and novels are going to be less dependent on Publishing Houses and more on electronic formats, I felt. In other words, books are likely to be bought and sold in electronic format through internet and with more direct involvement of writers and readers. At least this is my gut feeling.

So, Indian boy coming to north America sometime in the last century - this is one theme that might work. May be he kinda falls in love with an Italian emigrant woman that works in a laundry, while a mexican young mother that lost her husband through snakebite sort of likes him. Heck, the story is already getting complicated and turning into a triangle. I wonder if such story lines have any appeal what so ever with the larger readership. Perhaps no.

Perhaps just a quiet brooding kind of person that likes to observe life around himself and either talk to himself, or writes his own diary, or somehow passes on his observations to a writer (me) living a century into the future. How about him standing in line to collect weekly salary in a model T factory run by Henry ford? Or, going further into the past, actually working as a translator between a railway overseer and a bunch of Chinese labor. For this, he would have to know some Cantonese of Mandarin. Actually, I have no idea what language the early Chinese immigrants that worked on the railway system in the US spoke, or where they came from. Perhaps from Hong Kong, since that was a British Colony and connected to the west already. Or am I wrong ? Clearly, I need to do some research into these things. Besides, I know no Chinese at all. So, the Indian boy last century can hardly be expected to speak Chinese, unless he himself was living in Hong Kong for a while. It just so happens that I myself was living in Hong Kong for a while. Is there a sort of a connection ? Could it be that the boy had a wife or a mistress left behind in Hong Kong, a Suzy Wong of his own, that taught him Cantonese ?

Hmm… just talking about plots might be more interesting than actually writing the story.

Anyhow, the man that introspects a lot - well, what does he notice about life around himself ? The gun toting trigger happy Americans of the wild west - they likely had no time for a brown skinned Indian boy - mostly would mistake him for a Mexican. And I knew only a smattering of Spanish, not enough for the hero to pass off as a Mexican. But, perhaps he knew enough to get by, and perhaps that young mother sort of spoke with him in Spanish often enough. Which young mother ? I wrote about her already, the one that kinda liked the Indian boy. Hmm.. this is worth thinking through again.

But, just to make it more intriguing - how about a white skinned girl breaking the race barrier of the time, and offering to run away with him? Heck, there’d likely be a posse headed by the father and the town marshal after him. That might turn the story into some sort of a Luis L’Amour type of western thriller, where the hero ends up finding gold somewhere in Tennessee and befriending some passing Mormons, or Cherokee Indians, or a traveling circus, or whatever, and finds refuge, and ends up making a family with his new Russian wife, only to end up complicating matters because the Siox attack us and run off with the wife - traces of the movie The Little Big Man, while the Cantonese wife ends up somehow traveling to the new world and finding the hero. All hell breaks lose because by then he has a siox squaw too, who is notional about who shares my tepee.

But on the other hand, the hero could spend time wondering. Why did the smoky blue mountains come up ? Why do mountains come up at all? Perhaps he stumbles upon a fossil or two in Montana. Ohh, he gets to Montana somehow. Let us say, he comes across these fossil vertebra without any knowledge of such past creatures. This makes him contemplate. Also, he wonders why some creatures that look like gigantic fish, are to be found on the sides of mountains a thousand mile from the ocean. He gets to wonder if continents have always been the same or if they move about, rise and fall and change with time. Perhaps he even wonders if man came by workmanship of God, or chance evolution. Maybe someone will tell him about Charles Darwin, a white bearded man that looked like Moses, but was, in more ways than one - an anti-Moses. Where the man, coming from India, has a copy of Gita and reads it or not? I suspect not. I also suspect he cannot read Indian languages much, except, er, Bengali ?

But, leaving all that, how about a man that turns and entrepreneur and lives the so called American dream, only to realize, at the end of his life, that it was all quite worthless ? Or, somehow he ends up in the US during the civil rights movement and feels the brunt of racial hatred in the south, or the compassion of the quakers and ends up working in the underground railway.

But, why not be a bit more adventurous and mix him up with an Inuit village somewhere up north just around the Klondike gold rush? Perhaps he became a handler of a bunch of camels someone imported for helping out with the road building into the Canadian rockies - an experiment that backfired because the camels had a bad habit of trying to eat the tents of prospectors and miners, while the horses and donkeys had never seen wooly camels before and went berserk and would run off every tim the camels came into sight. In the middle of all this confusion, the boy would fall for the daughter of the owner of a stable that refused to house the camels. I might have to do some research into the history of the time. I know camels were brought in. Also, one could toss in a hanging or two. There was the famous hangman’s tree in Lillooet. Perhaps the story would describe the area around Lillooet and the Fraser and Thompson rivers and the works of the Canadian pacific railway men.

May be it should not be such a story at all. Let the man come in current times and contemplate sitting at Stanley Park on weekends. Or better still, let it be a set of essays.

Am I capable of writing non fiction essays? About what ? Current affairs? My observation of the world at large? Perhaps essays in English and Bengali ?
In a way, this is itself is an essay about writing.

Well, instead of writing a book, I might just continue to write about writing a book. How about that ?

A sense of unease

Yesterday was not much different from any other.
Yet, it was depressing.

It has not been easy for me to pinpoint a singular reason for the depression, mild as it was. The day itself started normal, meaning getting up when the alarm rang, and spending time at the sink, trying to clean my gums, which were having more than normal infection at the roots of my teeth. This was making more than one a bit loose. Perhaps in the next few months, a few would need to be pulled.

The girl at the Dentist that told me to care for his gums, was a pretty immigrant from Ukraine. She had married a French Canadian, and settled in Western Canada. She had a good memory for faces. She remembered that she had treated cleaned my teeth at the Dentist a year ago. I could not remember her name or her face, though that was partially because they cover their face in a medical mask when they work. Still, I had felt sort of sorry that I did not remember her. She had sparkling blue eyes, and spoke about the transformation taking place in Eastern Europe, when I asked about it.

I had washed my mouth and checked for traces of blood, especially after cleaning the gums at the root of teeth. Irene, the dental assistant, had asked me to shoot for gradual improvement of the gum infection situation, so that less of the roots would bleed when I poked at them. I was sort of happy to note that only two of them bled a little, unlike four a few days ago. A good sign.

The day itself was clear and sunny, unlike the previous day. It rains more than it snows in winter, if you are in the lower mainlands south of Vancouver. This is one reason the climate in British Columbia is milder than in the rest of Canada. It has something to do with the Rocky mountains and the warm ocean air that comes off the Pacific ocean but is trapped by the Rockies. This moisture laden warm air ends up increasing precipitation in British Columbia and preventing it getting too cold. So, it rains more than it snows, out here . I could draw a vague similarity with the Indian monsoon, which was also a product of warm and moist air off the Indian ocean being trapped by the Himalayas. Different continent, different season and different direction of the air current, but there were similarities in heavy rainfall.

But, rainy days in winter is not the most comfortable to drive through. I would prefer it to heavy snowfall to drive through. Nonetheless, the traffic slows down. The fog effect keeps clouding the windscreen, the side and rear windows and mirrors. Visibility reduces, and traffic slows down. Those who are in a hurry, this is a cause for frustration, and perhaps a few accidents - which further slows the traffic.

But for those that have learned be philosophical about it - this is an opportunity for introspection, or catching up. Catching up with what ? For me, this is the time to catch up with the world. In particular, catching up with world news. Over the years, our method of gathering news has evolved. In my school days in Santiniketan, we had a radio. There was just one of two state controlled radio channels, called Akashvani. And we could hear news a few times a day. The word Akashvani literally meant - message from the sky. Was the news any good? I do not remember, but suspect it must not have been very exciting, since I do not seem to remember every being too eager to listen to it.

I remember my now departed father talking about listening to news during the second world war. He was in his early twenties at the time. In Santiniketan, someone had a Radio. About once a month or so, folks were invited to congregate in some place, where this Radio was rigged up for everyone to listen to the news - mainly war news and what Hitler was up to and what the Allied powers were doing.

Anyhow, we did not get daily newspapers those days. My uncles, who lived about mile away, got one daily newspaper in Bengali - Ananda Bazar Patrika. It arrived by train from Calcutta and was delivered in the afternoon. I remember glancing at it time to time, especially if there was news of a cricket match. The person that usually read the entire paper from end to end, was my grand mother.

By the time I was in college in Bombay, transistor radios were common. TV was still boring and black and white. English newspapers were more common in the college hostel. But, I did not have any habit of reading news with any seriously. I did by then have a few pen friends - all girls and all living outside India. The letters were interesting - but did not really count as channels for exchange of news. One of them was a French girl that lived in Paris - but, I never got around to learning much about France, in the few years when I exchanged a few letters with her. But, I do remember Rober Kennedy being shot and eventually dying from that in a hospital. I was shocked.

During my working life, I had a rather fancy Sony Digital Radio that had programmable channels that could be set to BBC news or Voice of America or Soviet News of All India Radio etc. I used to work on a ship as an engineer, and usually used that small radio to listen to world news through short wave. As far as I can see, my gathering of world news really took off during that phase.

Later on, when I lived in Hong Kong or USA, the TV replaced the radio - but somehow, the quality of news delivered and received, deteriorated. I remember being frustrated at the hours and hours of news coverage on TV on a single subject - OJ Simpson and if he did or did not murder his ex wife. That literally turned me off TV for good, and I have never recovered from it. But by then, internet was looming large, and proved to be among the best sources for news man could imagine.

As news channels got consolidated and concentrated in a few hands, so did independent sources proliferate. It was cheap to put up things on the internet, and citizen reporting got off the ground. I was hooked.

Then Apple went and invented the iPod, and the internet invented the Podcast. The world was no more the same. The sources of information through audio podcasts, and iPods ability to automatically synchronize and download new information and its ability to hold vast amount of such information, to be played and listened to later - literally changed my way of gathering information. I hooked the iPod to the car music system, and would listen to news, while stuck in traffic in pouring rain on the way to work.

It was all those things that eventually prompted me to learn to make my own podcasts, but thats another story.
Meanwhile, yesterday, I was listening to BBC, and also to KCRW’s left, right and centre podcast. I also listened to Amy Goodman speaking about Palestine looking for statehood at the UN general assembly.

Through all this I was vaguely disappointed at the lack of options on the podcast channels to get some high quality news and analysis about India and China, either in Bengali or English. These two countries where, along with Brazil, South Africa and Russia, the new emerging nations and getting increasingly important for all sorts of reasons. But news and analysis about them was still doled out from western sources. I had learned enough by them to identify these sources as biased and incomplete, and should be augmented by more local sources from these regions. Unfortunately there did not seem to be many that rose above r e the trivial level.

Anyhow, that was not reason enough for a mild depression at the end of the day. Over the years, I had gotten increasingly occupied in my idle times about my state of affairs - rather, it was about the state of the country, the economy, the civilization and indeed, of the planet. I have a mild suspicion that the depression, mild and in the background, is somehow rooted into a sense that all is not well with what man has done with himself and the atmosphere around him. Its a mild foreboding that the future is worse than the past.

Since there is nothing much I could do about it, and since this was essentially a global issue, and since I was not the savior of the world, I should have been above it all. But somehow, I suspect, I was not above it.

Anyhow, a single lunch break is likely not enough to cover the state of the Universe, or why one might develop nagging doubts about things.
So I shall end this one by a simple - cheers and take care.

A changing world

A month has past since I last posted here.
I had written about the gap analysis between the Governor’s HLC report on Visva Bharati / Santiniketan and what we think today as necessary steps.
The world, meanwhile, is a month older, and so are we. What has changed ?

Well, for one thing, I had made a trip to Guangzhou province of China to inspect and take part in the sea trial of a newly build ship, which is being readied for delivery.

Other than that, there is a newly formed NGO, which is not yet registered, where I am part of the group that founded it. The name of the group is Vancouver Tagore Society or VTS. I have to get used to that abbreviation. Anyhow, the main idea was Duke’s. He got involved with another established NGO, named World Poetry Reading, regarding celebration of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary. The upshot of that collaboration was a day long event on the 10th of September, at Richmond cultural centre, performed by a varied group of people, towards RNT150 (an abbreviation of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th anniversary). And I had agreed to make one presentation - Tagore’s efforts at Rural Reconstruction as a basic step in nation building.
There are others that also contributed. But, from my perspective, this is perhaps the second time I came on stage to present anything relating to Tagore before a crowd. In 2008 December I had presented a ten minute piece on how Santiniketan, and Tagore’s ideas, had influenced my thought process and personality. That was presented at a function called ‘শান্তিনিকেতনের সেকাল ও একাল’ or - Santiniketan, past and present, staged at Natyaghar, the main hall in Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan.

I met Pushpa Jain at the RNT150 at Richmond Cultural Centre. She did her PhD in maths in 1997/98 in Santiniketan, taught maths in Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and took early retirement due blood cancer.
But apart from me, Richmond Cultural Centre, VTS, and RNT150, what else has been happening in the recent months? Visva-Bharati is waiting for a new vice chancellor. We were hoping that Piyali Palit or Udaya Narayan Singh might be selected. But the politicians manipulate these things - so the person selected might turn out to be very different.
For one thing - the global economic allergy is still persisting. The more I think about it, and read about it, and I have been doing so for over a few decades now, I feel more convinced that there is no real solution to ensure further sustained grown, globally speaking, and the reason is that we, mankind, have over-extended ourselves. Believing that we are the chosen species by God and therefore have a license to kill the planet, have proceeded to do just that. So, in the largest perspective, the current civilization is unsustainable. Mankind will either learn to reverse its damaging trends on its own wisdom, or it will be forced to do so. But before any such corrective measures take place, the planet will be much worsened, and a lot more of the ecosystem, flora and fauna will disappear.
Even vultures are going extinct in India an surrounding countries. In the 1990s the vulture population, Griffon cultures and oriental white backed vultures, started dying off at alarming rates, over 40% every year. Some of these species, especially the white backed, has now lost 99.99% of its original population and can be considered as good as extinct.

Why ? Apparently a cattle painkiller drug called diclofenac is the culprit. It stays in dead cows and vultures that eat these carcasses have rapid failure of their livers. The drug has been banned in 2006 but is still widely available. There are frantic efforts ongoing to save the species by various means. The latest report is that the efforts are not succeeding much. The rate of their population decline is faster than any known bird species, including the famous dodo that went extinct around the 17th century through man’s intervention.

Vultures play a very important role in the south Asian ecosystem. The goings on is an example among many others, showing the disastrous effects of human technology or its false promises, on the future of the living planet.
So, what else has happened? US military is still in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama appears a good talker but not much else. Jack Lytton died of cancer. Steve Jobs is suffering from Pancreatic cancer and gave up his post at Apple. Japan is reeling under multiple bad news - Tsunami followed by failure of the nuclear power plants at Fukushima followed by leaks of radiation. This came at the end of a decade long recession and a major mental depression of the nation.
Binayak Sen was given bail by the Supreme Court of India. Julian Assange remains in house arrest in the UK.

Worlds oceans have been overfished by industrial nations to such an extent that major depletion of fish population is affecting the ecosystem and animals as well as men have to adjust to it. The Sea Lions and Seals are re-adjusting their food habits and hunting grounds, apart from experiencing decline in population. Toothed whales are fairing no better, including the famous killer whales. On the human side, a lot of coastal fishermen communities are devastated, and some have turned criminal - example the rising piracy off the Somali coast. While there is a lot of talk on eradicating, or controlling this newfound piracy - no politician is willing to talk of the underlying problem - overfishing.

The arctic ice sheet is melting away ever faster. The Canadian north is opening up. Global warming will make more species go extinct and more low lying lands go under water.
Turkey got angry at Israel for killing a number of Turks in an attack on an aid flotilla for Palestine and then refusing to apologize for it. Its Prime Minsiter is the new hero for the middle class Arabs, while embarrassing the Arab leaders and alarming the Israeli and Amaricans.
Nato pounded Lybia and helped force a change of regime. No idea what the new regime will compose of. Ruper Murdock got into hot water over embarrassing leaks of illegal activity of its British media company News of the World. There was a Royal Wedding in London, which most of us were unaware of and did not watch.
The proposed oil pipeline project from Alberta to Texas is drawing protest. Naomi Klien of Canada was arrested, among many others, sitting in to protest it in the US. Dalai Lama has joined the protesters.
The Arab Spring turned out to be less than a watershed event. We knew nothing much about Tunisia before the spring, and know as less about it after the spring. Egypt tossed out Mubarak, but the Army is in power and not the people nor democracy. Lybia is still in turmoil and Assad is still in power in Syria. Saudi Arabia is still a monarchy, as is many other smaller nations there.
Meanwhile, democracy has been overblown and as far as India and many other nations are concerned, is compromised and degraded through corruption.
The biggest hero to emerge out of it all, in my book, is Anna Hazare and his team. Time will tell how it turns out.
Stone age India is another piece of news that got my attention. There is not enough room to write about it properly here. Suffice it to say, the hominid species that migrated out of Africa and inhabited various regions of the world say 80,000 years ago are known in Europe and the middle east - but not much was known of them in India. That is now changing due to archaeological excavation works in Andhra Pradesh last century and a fresh effort now. Also, the story is linked with the Toba explosion, 74,000 years ago, when an Indonesian Island erupted in a major volcanic event. Indian subcontinent got covered in several inches of ash and the sulfurous particles in the atmosphere prevented sunlight from warming the earth. The eruption blanketed sunlight for years. Some climatologists claim that the planet got into a thousand year long cold snap as a result of that eruption. 99 percent of modern humans perished at the time, along with many other species.

Somehow, India played a crucial role and the excavations in Billa Surgam Caves of Andhra Pradesh is proving to be crucial. If I get to India, I intend to see if there is any chance of me visiting that site.

A Burmese elephant is being treated by a veteranarian. It wandered into Thailand and stepped on a land mine and injured itself. Another bizarre news in Thailand is that a tourist park in Pattaya region was flooded during high waters, and a large number of crocodiles escaped. Now the park authorities are frantically searching for them.
Floods and resultant outbreaks of decease has again ravaged North Korea, which reportedly faces a new bout of starvation and food crisis.
Many news papers and nature magazines are putting up colorful pictures of Corals and Coral reefs - because such reefs are suspected to go completely extinct as the first entire ecosystem to vanish due to man’s activity.

Well, thats all I could write up before feeling sleepy. I might add to these later on.

HLC REPORT’

  6. Rabindranath Tagore, a Biography - Oxford University Press

  14. Visva-Bharati News’
  15. Imperfect Encounter - Mary Lago’
Social Thoughts of Rabindranath Tagore

An invitation to the new administration of Visva-Bharati University

Monday, 1 August, 2011
(This is a translation of the original, composed in Bengali on the 30th of July 2011. The translation has been made on request from Mr Tan Lee and Ms Leena Chatterjee of Delta, BC, Canada)

My unfinished sketch of Singha Sadan
We hear that the last Vice Chancellor has left the University on completion of his contractual term. Is the time ripe now for us to join hands with the new administration towards some constructive work towards its regeneration? We have further heard that the task of selecting the new vice chancellor has moved to an advanced stage, that the selection committee has whittled the list down to a few and forward its recommendations to the office of the Prime Minister last Saturday. Media is rife with speculative snippets. Three names are being aired, Sri Udaya Narayan Singh, Ms Piyali Palit and Ms Surabhi Bannerjee.
Till the new vice chancellor is appointed, the responsibility of running the University rests with Dr. Udaya Narayan Singh. I was mulling over the ideas of if the new ambience might be conducive for us to exchange views and join hands with the University administration in some good work.
I do not know Ms Bannerjee, but know the other two persons. We believe both are good persons and would be good for the University. The question now is - those of us that have been watching Santiniketan from afar, and believe in the relevance and timelessness of Rabindranath’s efforts towards building an ideal educational environment, those of us who were willing to expend effort and labor within our means to help sustain the institution, those of us who might have offered to help only to get their fingers burnt and have since withdrawn, will the new administration be willing to re-engage with them and be interested to hear their views ?
My guess is - the new administration will. Confucius has already said long ago, that all things must and will change. That is about the only unchanging theory and fact in this world. Besides, Rabindranath has gone one up on that - mentioning that, whether change comes of not, and whether others agree with you or not, you must follow your inner compass and walk alone if need be.
Anyhow, if we invite the new administration for a meeting, and if it agrees, then how do we proceed further from there ?
I am jotting here whatever comes to mind first. This list does not claim to be the best or the final one, but simply jotting down what came to the mind of one person, myself, to follow up on my thoughts. I look forward to correcting and completing it with others input and assistance.
  1. First task might be to think through what should be the broad agenda for the initial kick off meeting. Perhaps we should prepare a very brief list of what our wish and expectations are, and invite the University to likewise let us know what it wishes from us.
  2. Who should join the meeting from our end? This is an important task. For example, Alumni association should represent the alumni, per UGC rules. Also, Asramik Sangha should represent the Asramiks, per system put in place by Tagore himself. There is reason to believe that it is time these two be merged, but that is not likely to happen in a day. So, perhaps both bodies should be present. Besides, there may be ex-students and well wishers outside of the leaders of these bodies that the University wishes to listen to as well. So there might be need for independents to join in as well.
  3. How many should be in the meeting? If there are too many, it generates merely noise and nothing much more. Besides, I have had the opportunity to be present in a few meetings with regard to the University and ex-students. My feeling is that the ability of the ex-student body in transforming decisions from a meeting into real work on the ground is rather poor. We like to talk, but lack vision or ability, and are mostly capable of implementing anything. So, it is possible that the team will be top heavy right from the start, and will run aground from the get go. In fact, this has been the most consistent element in our history, when it comes to organizing ability of ourselves, the ex-students.
  4. To maintain continuity, it may be worthwhile to chalk out a time table for annual or bi-annual meetings.
  5. Before we can offer advise to the University, it may be worthwhile to first learn the facts from the ground up that the University is obliged to deal with on a day to day basis, for example what are the issues in dealing with UGC and the Government, or with the Teachers association, workers union, student association etc. Only when we learn enough can our advise be of any value or relevance. Having said that, we still could not avoid jotting down some of the negative issues of the University as perceived from outside, and I have takent he liberty to pass my comment here. These may be removed or amended through more input from others.
  6. Rural reconstruction is not just the area of involvement for Sriniketan. It is a collective responsibility of the entire University. One of the key reason for existence of this University is to improve the stock of the villages, and remove the economic imbalance between the urban and the rural sphere. It may do more in raising consciousness in universalism, but it may not do less.
  7. There are reports of a disconnect between departments. Cultural functions organized by one does not benefit from contribution of other departments in singing, dancing, playing of musical instruments etc. This has to be corrected. All efforts will have the spirit of joint efforts with participation of the entire University, including the ex-students where applicable.
  8. Teachers and workers of the University cannot say their duty is only to take class and go home. If they do not feel it in their duty to attend morning prayers to evening sports grounds to Sahitya Sabha or engage in rural reconstruction tasks, then such teachers are to be deemed unsuitable for serving in Visva-Bharati. If students say their interest is only to study their specific subjects and nothing else, then such students are also to be deemed not suitable for education in Visva-Bharati.
  9. The university is not here to be a fall back job offering factory for children of the workers and teachers of the University. The atmosphere has to be changed such that students from outside, including abroad, are eager to come and enroll, and be happy and grateful to be here. If there are built in resistance and roadblocks - bold actions will be needed to have such obstacles removed
  10. The University will need to be greatly downsized, if necessary by closing down or trimming unproductive, wasteful departments.
  11. The University will not be used as breeding ground for politics. Nepotism needs to be stopped.
  12. Many of us have spent a lot of time passing judgment on others. Time has come to judge ourselves in self assessment. Let the administration judge itself and prepare a list of its short comings. Let the teachers do that about themselves. Let the workers and the students likewise do the same. Let us, the ex-students make a list of our own failings. My guess is that the list for the ex-students would be the longest, but we need to check that. Once we acknowledge our own failings and endeavor to correct them, we can perhaps earn the right to advise others on their failings.
  13. It has been reported that the administration moves en-mass to Kolkata for its meetings, instead of conducting them in Santiniketan. We need to ask why this is so. Perhaps it is time for the people to re-learn frugality and fiscal discipline. University should refrain from wastage of funds and resources. If a chance of venue is desired for their internal meetings on occasion, then considerations may be given to Sriniketan, Binoy Bhavan, Surul, Taltore, Bandhgora, Shyambati, Sien-danga and similar nearby locations. Before the meeting, the attendees may engage in conducting a tour of the village and see first hand on the condition of the people there and how effective the Universities efforts has been towards addressing their issues. Such practices are to be encouraged.
  14. Annual audit of the University will use the trend of self sufficiency and socio-economic improvement of the villages around Santiniketan as one of its yardsticks for measuring Visva-Bharati’s ability to fulfill its task. The audit guideline may therefore have to be redesigned too.
  15. It may well be that the University will not be allowed to follow some of these guidelines even if the people wish to do so, because of restrictions imposed on it by UGC or the Govt of India, stemming from a standardization of rules for Governing of Universities. If such is the case, the University along with the Ex-students, well wishers and the civic body will have to campaign and lobby for the Government to change its tules to recognize the uniqueness of Visva-Bharati University. The local member of parliament and legislative assembly may have to be met with and lobbied. All these are somewhere down the line, and only after the University and the well wishers have done their own part to the fullest. We cannot, or should not, demand sops from the Government without meeting them half way.
Instead of writing more, perhaps this list could be forwarded to Dr. Udaya Narayan Singh and Dr. Piyali Palit and others who are in the list for the Vice Chancellors post. Any thoughts on that?
I did ask a few during a global conference call two days ago, for people to consider jotting down their own thoughts and passing on, so the above list, can be amended, corrected and made more acceptable, before moving on.

I look forward to your comments. Please consider clicking the link below and leave your comments.
I hope Leena di will be satisfied with this hurried translation.
