Tracing my grandfather's footsteps

A grandson's attempt to reconnect with his grandfather
of a century in the past
Thursday, 21 July, 2011

It has been almost a month since I seriously contemplated researching the life and times of my grand father Kalimohan Ghsosh, and same time learn a bit more about Rabindranath Tagore's efforts at rural reconstruction.
In the past one month, I have written about six different articles on my grand father. Some have been in Bengali, but a majority are in English. I have put some up as a blog on my google account, and some as note on Facebook. At least one was circulated through emails to a few. This one is created on an iPad while having a beer at a pub and looking over a few of letters between Tagore and Rothenstein that refers to Kalimohan. Where this article would go, I am not sure yet. Also, the articles I wrote would not stitch neatly with one another, because they are not yet organized enough to be composed for a book. I am still in am exploratory stage about writing style and format. I do not even know if all these efforts deserve to be in a printed and published book in hard copy, or should be electronically distributed as a blog, or a PDF collection of writings or a E-book or some other incarnation. Perhaps this can be collection like Bhulumama's Santiniketaner Chithi was, coming out about twice a month in Ananda Bazar Patrika. The stories in the letters were not necessarily connected to each other, but all of them were like a lucid journal with the primary function of describing life and time in Santiniketan between 1952 and 1957.
Perhaps my writings can also be segmented similarly, each a self contained episode of it's own, but with the common theme of an effort to reconnect with my grandfather, who died 10 years before I was born.

Paintings and poems

So, I am sitting here with a book edited by Mary Lago, published by Harvard University Press in 1972 and contains a trail of a thirty year long correspondence between Rabindranath Tagore and William Rothenstein. Not all the letters survive, but Ms Lago, then Lecturer in English at the University of Missouri at Columbia, has done her best of collecting all that could be traced, along with a few very interesting photographs and sketches. Rothenstein wrote to Tagore in 1912, soon after they met and became friends - "You have walked so quietly into my life, yet somehow you have filled it with a new essence & I don't feel ever be quite the old life I shall live again."
They wrote over two hundred letters to each other over the next thirty years, averaging some 8 every year. But for me, tucked away into them are ten references of Kalimohan Ghosh. The first few involves my grand father, as a young thirty three years old, posing for Rothenstein on a few of his famous paintings of Indian scenes. The last one refered to translations of Kabir’s poems, where Kshitimohan Sen and Ajit Chakraborti did the first draft from the original Hindi, some of which then were apparently re-edited by Ezra Pound and my grandfather Kalimohan. Tagore himself also got involved and translated many of them. Tagore also tried to get the English translation of Kabir published soon, but apparently there were a few roadblocks, lack of enough noted English editors that knew about Kabir or sufi mysticism being one of them. Anyhow, there is a mention of “Certain poems of Kabir, translated by Kalimohan Ghose and Ezra Pound. From the edition of Mr. Kshitimohan Sen” MR 13 [1913] 611-613. I wonder if I could get my hands on that book.

I have ordered the book of a hundred poems of Kabir by Sir Rabindranath Tagore and Evelun Underhill that Rothenstein mentionsm. I look forward to what it might contain in reference to not just Kshitimohan Sen and Ajit Chakraborti, but also Kalimohan Ghosh and Ezra Pound. Perhaps I would  retrace the effort of my grandfather, along with Ezra Pound, toiling with the lines of Kabir, into English.
It was persistent high quality research of Mary Lago that unearthed the truth that Rothenstein’s paintings done in the second decade of the last century had my grandfather as a model. He apparently did not much talk about it in later years with his children, nor leave much information about those events in Santiniketan. My mother, I remember, lamented that she did not know about it, neither did her brothers according to her, till late in her life through us. Mary Lago’s book was published in 1972, but it would take more reading by people to pluck that information out of the book. Nimai Chatterjee had seen those pictures, he did mention, especially the one in India house with the scene of a ghat in Kashi, with both Tagore and Kalimohan used as candidates, gathering dust at a corner. I remmeber seeing it a few years ago where the pinting was prominently put up on a wall of a meeting room hall upstairs upstairs in India House, London. I could immediately recognize both a middle aged Tagore and a young Kalimohan.

Kuri had done good work identifying the locations of the paintings and seeking permission from India house as well as the Westminster, to see the two paintings where by Grandfather was a model for Rothenstein, both done around 1912-1913 in London. That is one year shy of a century ago.
And here I was, going through over two hundred letters between Tagore and Rottenstein, looking for more snippets of information that might help me retrace my grand fathers steps. Folks knew of enough pundits in Santiniketan that congregated around Gurudev Rabidnranath. Kalimohan was not supposed to be one of them. What was he doing, sitting with the American expatriate literary critic, poet and a rising force in the early modernist movement in English poetry, hauling it out of the Victorian era. What was my grandfather Kalimohan had at all common with him? How come the two of them, a few years apart in age as they were, doing with english translation of an ancient sufi mystic poet of punjab that was brought up in a Muslim home and later adopted by the Bhakti saint Ramananda, whose that so influenced the later Bhakti movement as well as Sikhism, and whose philosophy was to so influence Tagore too? Kabir did not become a sadhu, or a fakir. He did not embrace Sanyas and leave worldly life behind. He often spoke about leaving the Quran and the Veda behind, and follow the “sahaja” or simple path of living life and being touched by God. He was perhaps the first saint in India to have combined both Hindu and Islamic faith into a unified and universal path which both could follow without conflict. Rabindranath himself had been influenced by Kabir. He has written throughout his life on similar themes. Kabir created his verse with rustic vernacular compositions,  whereas Tagore expanded them greatly through his own self realization and powerful hold on languages Sanskritic, Bengali and English. I find evidence of Tagore’s universalism in spirituality in song after song, and writing after writing. Even Gitanjali is full of them.
Could it be that some of it had also rubbed off on Kalimohan ? I have learned that Kalimohan practiced a religion of his own which was only superficially Hindu, but without any ornamentation and indistinguishable at the root from most other faiths. I know he visited Muslim Mosques and take oath in the name of Allah to gain trust of the muslim villagers both in Shilaidah and around Santiniketan. I know he dallied a lot with the Brahmo Samaj movement and really liked the concept of a formless creator that is omnipresent, and did not allow replica of Hindu deities inside his home. Withought actually reading his diary (yet), I am beginning to bet that Rabindranath Tagore was a very big influence in Kalimohan’s pshyche, and Kalimohan had followed Tagore and Kabir into the path of a universal humanism that did not find any discriminatory distinction between one man and another and one creation and another and yet exulted in the richness and variety that life presented.
All that I am just beginning to understand. I think I would have greatly benefitted from a chance to sit with my grand father and actually going over these items with him. Unfortunately, that was not to be. But, somewhere along the line, Kalimohan the worker and the village man that worked with the uneducated peasants, had acquired enough literary acumen not only to appreciate Kabirs compositions, but enough dexterity in English language to be able to refine rough translations of Kshitimohan Sen, and that too with the likes of Ezra Pound. My grand father was around 33 years old at the time.

লোকে বলে, একজনের সম্বন্ধে লিখতে বা বুঝতে গেলে - one would need to walk in his shoes first।

Kalimohan was the only believer those days in Tagore's ideas of rural reconstruction

Rabindranath was an exceptionally well travelled man for his time, even by European or American standards. Along with that, he carried an unquenchable thirst to learn about the nature, flora, fauna and the fabric of humanity wherever he went. Having an analytical mind and being acutely conscious of the plight of the impoverished masses in India, he could not help but wonder what were good about the lands he visited, that could be either emulated, or modified, to suit the needs of India.
Rabindranath had written that, early in his life, (1) when living in a houseboat tied to the banks of the Padma river in today’s Bangladesh, he had thought that his life’s pursuit was going to be primarily writing poems and songs and a lifelong engagement with literary creation. Nothing else.
But then, he could not but notice the plight of the poor peasants, many of them subjects of his own family estate. He could not help analyze the issue and come to the conclusion, rightly, that true progress for nation cannot come without starting at the root, which means, uplifting the masses from their sorry state. Rabindranath did mention that observation to a noted national Politician of the time in Pabna Conference. However, the politician disregarded that observation as he did not think much about the poor masses. Rabindranath concluded that, the politician possibly imported the notion of “nationhood” from foreign sources, and did not harbor any fellow feeling with the rural populace, restricting his world to the tiny slice of middle class city dwellers.
Anyhow, Rabindranath reminisces  that while he did not consider himself qualified for any work other than literary, he changed his mind. When he could not convince anybody else at the time, that real work for independence starts with turning the villages of India into self sustainable healthy units, he decided to tuck his pen behind his ear, and engage himself to the task of toiling with the cultivators, the artisans and the stone cutters of the land, in an effort to find a path towards progress for the masses.
It came to him that the real ownership of and relationship with, agricultural land belonged to the poor cultivators, and not the land lord. He also wondered how samabaya samiti (collective cooperatives) could pool in resources in the villages and joining hands in cultivating larger plots of land collectively, rather than the small plots where each persons does what he can on his own slice. To this end, he found the experiments ongoing in Russia of great interest (1).
Rabindranath write that, in those days of early effort in his Zamindari estates in todays Bangladesh, his only real companion in this work was a teenage Kalimohan Ghosh. Feeble and sickly, Kalimohan often succumbed to fever twice a day. On top of that, his name was in the Police diaries, likely to be arrested some day for sedition, since he was involved with the Swadeshi, or freedom movement as a young boy (1).
Kalimohan genuinely believed in Rabindranath’s analysis of India’s weakness, where the social foundation was weak and rotting. Any work towards regeneration must first start with rebuilding a robust foundation, over which future generations can built monuments and building blocks for the nation.
Kalimohan was undernourished and overworked in hot and humid conditions day and night in the Muslim villages in and around the Tagore estates, often going without proper meal or sleep, and spending nights in sheds without proper beds, or protection from mosquito and bugs. He developed various skin, stomach and lung ailments along with malaria, and eventually a form of tuberculoses. That was when Tagore got worried that he the young dedicated social worker might not survive.
The fact that Rabindranath mentioned this repeatedly in his writings, remembering how lonely he was those days in his efforts to do something for the downtrodden villagers, where Kalimohan was the only true believer he had, goes to show the depth of Rabindranath’s feelings, not just for Kalimohan, but his convictions that any work towards progress for his moribund nation needed to include first and foremost improving the lot of its village dwellers and stopping them from exploitation.
Tagore’s serious effort to save him was the reason Kalimohan lived on for decades and had a children  including my mother, and indeed, the reason I myself am here, writing this blog.
But rechecking Tagore’s own writings on it, and connecting it with what my grandmother used to say, how Kalimohan was enfeebled in his work in the villages of the Tagore estate and his passionate involvement with Rabindranath’s ideas of rural reconstruction work, and how, desperate to save his life, Tagore eventually had to call an English doctor - an unheard of thing for rural folks those days, and had to send him off to a dry land to recuperate, I gradually came to the conclusion that this was a rather close call for a young Kalimohan Ghosh. He almost died at the wheel. In a strange way, I felt I owed my very existence to Rabindranath’s serious effort to save Kalimohan. Rabindranath, himself only in his thirties at the time, who thought he wanted to do nothing more than write poems and songs, but ended up, lonely and misunderstood by his peers, trying his best with the limited resources at his disposal to search for and experiment with means to firm up and rebuild the rickety and crumbling social foundation of the nation of India.
And I, sitting in relative comfort in Canada, literally owned my life to him.
I think, if I had said this to my mother, Sujata Mitra, perhaps the biggest fan of Kalimohan among his children, she would have been pleased.
I hope you are listening from up there, ma.

Remembering Kalimohan

Facebook is one of those newfangled Global Kalor Dokan cum cork board, where friends drop in, pin a note or a picture, read up on others notes, and generally stay in touch. My circle of friends had quickly risen to over 400 when I realized I could not do justice to such a large number and have pruned it down to 140, which has slowly now swollen to 170 or so.
There, I had spoken about starting to write in a blog or something, about my grand father Kalimohan Ghosh. I have had requested by Tirthankar and Mandakanta Bose to do so. Other than that, Tan Lee da and his wife Leena Chatterjee too have been asking me to write something about Tagore’s views on rural reconstruction and the importance Sriniketan had to his views of overall development of human potential for India.
Ananda, Tan Lee da’s son, sent a note from California on Facebook, which I shall include here:

Quote :
Village-scale development, coupled with economic re-localization, may be the most important area of study and thought for the world in crisis....your grandfather's work and the ideas of Elmhirst, Tagore and others remains an unfinished odyssey........worthy of revival.
Unquote

While this might show an example how Facebook helps like minded but distant people keep abreast of each other and draw encouragement on worthy tasks, it is the content of his note that is worthy of consideration.
Ananda describes the world in a crisis, and mentions the need for village scale development and a shift in the centers of economic activity back to the villages. These were the very themes that bothered people like Gandhi and Tagore, in their quest to think through the right path for India after she gained independence.
But, how was life in Birnhum in the 1930s, when Rabindranath was using what help was available, both with hands on experimentation as well as systematic study of the situation?

I shall quote here from the October 1934 issue of Sankhya, the Indian journal of statistics, edited by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, written by Dr. Hashem Amir Ali, and assisted by Tara Krishna Bose and J.N. Talukdar, of Visva Bharati Institute of Rural Reconstruction, Sriniketan.

Quote
Rice is the basis of rural economy in lower Birbhum. Cleaned rice constitutes 98.8% of the total exports from Bolpur station. Out of the total cultivated area in the jurisdiction of the Visva-Bharati Central Co-operative Bank, 90% is under rice alone.

In this, as in many other parts of India, the rice plant provides the grain for human food, its straw is used for fodder as well as for providing shelter. It is by the sale of his surplus in rice that the villager obtains the cash to pay the rent and the revenue. If the harvest of rice is good, there is plenty of food and sufficient money in the villages. If the rice crop fails, there is general disorganizations: loans get overdue to the Co-operative Societies, the cattle starve, the houses go unthatched. In normal years those whose fields have yielded a good harvest are prosperous; while those whose fields have been barren are exposed to the ills of poverty. Indeed, so much depends upon the yield of rice that the importance of detailed field studies on various aspects or rice cultivation cannot be over-emphasized.

The person who encouraged Mahalanobis to arrange for this study around Bolpur, was Tagore. Yes, the need for detailed field study on various aspects of rice cultivation cannot be over-emphasized. Likewise, the effort Tagore had put in towards Sriniketan being a centre for this study and for active engagement in all fields of rural reconstruction, also cannot be over-emphasized.

While Mohalanobis was the statistician, Leonard Elmhirst was the policy developer and Dorothy the donor, Kalimohan was the social worker, all contributing towards the same end.
Today, Sriniketan is a hollow ghost of its original self, regretfully. There has been progress on one side, and stagnation on another. That work, like Ananda says, remains an unfinished odyssey, worthy of revival.

However, I cannot but notice that some of the observations made by Tagore a almost a century ago, regarding division between people, and the rural community being exploited, remains so till today. What has changed is that the Englishmen are gone, and have been replaced by a ballooning urban middle class that appear perhaps as ignorant and uncaring of the rural heart land as any Englishman was.

Meanwhile, the world is possibly facing a crisis of unsustainable overconsumption and degradation of its rural landscape, while stripping the planet of its nourishment faster than the planet can replenish the drain.
There is a rising awareness that something is seriously amiss, not just in India, but in the entire world, with the western theory of progress, growth and wealth creation.

India could have been a path finder for the rest of the world. Good work was started by a number of people in a number of ways a long time ago, for the future generations to carry on this vitally important task.
Kalimohan was a small but important piece in that puzzle, and is today more or less forgotten, as has Sriniketan and what it represented has been forgotten.

Meanwhile, the rising middle class was busy following a western tinted dream, and we neglected this important work, once Tagore, Gandhi and the like were gone from among us.

We blew it. And as Ananda says, we are now at a crisis.
But, I was supposed to write about my grand father - and not the ills of western consumer driven economic model. It is hard, in my mind, to keep the two related issues apart.

My grand mother remembers times when Kalimohan would not return home for days on end, stuck in some remote village on some urgent work. Those days the primary mode of transport was originally walking, cycling or a bullock cart. Later, he got a pony. Even later, for medical emergencies in rural villages, a motor vehicle was sometimes made available from Santiniketan. But the roads to the villages were bare earth and in monsoon would be a sea of mud where nothing wold go, not cycle, nor a bullock cart or motor vehicle. One would have to walk miles through the mud to reach a village. In summer and the rainy season, the heat would sap your strength. And then there were the mosquitoes, and the threat of the infectious decease of malaria through mosquito bites.

Kalimohan would be stuck in remote corners, sometimes shoring up a bank of a river with newly formed village volunteer groups, or preparing temporary shelters for flood victims, or cutting trenches for drainage of stagnant water, or presiding over disputes between Hindu and Muslim villages, or collecting frayed centuries old family owned manuscripts that the owners are not longer able to maintain, and wish to hand over to Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, to preserve and study.
I have spent long hours listening to Manorama Ghosh mention not just her memories of her husband and his works, but even after his death, the degree of respect that was extended to her from unexpected quarters, just because she was the bibi of “Kali babu”.

More later.

Let me know how you like it. Consider placing your comments at the bottom of the post, where they remain me and others to see.

Thanks

My thoughts about my grand father.

Monday, July 11, 2011
It has not been comfortable for me to contemplate writing about my grand father. Firstly I did not, and still do not, consider myself really qualified to speak about the life and times of Kalimohan Ghosh, except to reminisce as a relative. But then, he died ten years before I was born, so there is really no question of having any direct memory of him.

But, I remember my mother talking about him. I remember her mentioning with regret, that his children and her brothers, some of whom were well established and accomplished as writers and journalists, and many of them champions and promoters of Rabindranath’s creative vision, did not take it upon themselves to highlight this important and inspirational persons silent work behind the scenes with the downtrodden and the out of site people living in villages surrounding Santiniketan.
It eventually became clear to me, that among all the children of Kalimohan Ghosh, of which seven reached adulthood and one died soon after birth, my mother was the closest to Kalimohan, and felt the loss of him the most. My mother did not consider herself gifted like her brothers, and did not feel qualified enough to write about her father. However, she was eventually driven to write, in absence of her brothers doing so, a lengthy article in the women’s magazine “Sreyashi”, a copy of which she sent to me. That had become one of my important introduction and reference point to my grand father, Kalimohan. Clearly, my mother idolized her dad and at the same time considered him as her true friend, guide and moral pathfinder, and losing him at the tender age of 15 was an indelible scar in her life. Even in her late years my mother often mentioned her father and wished he would guide her with his moral compass through trying times.

That moral compass played a big role in Kalimohan’s life and it left its mark on my mother, who also inherited my grandmother’s stubbornness and willpower. I now understand that my grandfather had acquired most of the strength of his convictions through Rabidnranath Tagore, particularly about the need to eliminate barriers people had erected between themselves in India over centuries and millennia of accumulated dead habit and selfishness. This involved caste barriers among hindus, religious barriers between Hindu, Muslim and other faiths, and ethnic barriers between mainstream Indians and the aboriginals and marginal people. Kalimohan had understood that the “root cause” of the inherent weakness, division and injustice in India, which made it possible for outsiders to rule this grand nation, was established on falsehood, but that the practice was deep rooted and would need enormous effort to eradicate. Lecturing people will not work. Promoting one’s own system and trying to convert others into it will also not do.

There would be a need to set example with their own lives, Tagore’s, Kalimohan’s and everyone else that joins this grand experiment, that they are above the smallness of such barriers. There would be need to rebuild trust between people, trust that had been missing for centuries.

Tagore was like a father figure for Kalimohan, who lost his own father very early in life, and was a rudderless teen when he was tending to fall prey to a violent form of Swadeshi, where one might physically create or support violence against the ruling British Raj, in order to drive them from India. A chance encounter with Rabindranath Tagore, in his thirties at the time, altered Kalimohan’s life. Rabindranath had spoken to him and shown him the real “root cause” because of which it was possible for a handful of Englishmen to exploit India, while Indians enjoyed perhaps a five thousand fold numerical advantage. If this root cause, the social evil that divides people, could be removed, and Indians joined hands with each other, there would really be no need to push the British out. They would go willingly and as a friend would interact thence with India as equal partners in a world of equal humans.

There is another angle that I would like to add here. The work done by my grandfather first in the Tagore estates in todays Bangladesh and later around Santiniketan really are efforts towards economic reorganization of the land, and finding a balance between both man and nature, as well as urban and rural communities. Rabindranath Tagore had realized, through his study of Indian history, philosophy, and study of the west, and applying that knowledge through his analytical mind, that India’s salvation did not lie in either merely aping the west or falling back on the orthodoxy of a divided nation. More profoundly, he had realized that  the real source of all of India’s philosophical and spiritual strength and creative zeal came primarily from a rural environment. The Urban centers  were for creation of material goods and there was a healthy exchange between machined goods from the cities and towns and agricultural produce, goods created by rural artisans as well as social, spiritual and cultural creativity from the rural areas. Quality of life in the past, was different but equal in the urban and rural landscape. This was no more the case, as India had changed to adopt a twisted version of the western economic model, whereby the Urban centers exploit the rural masses, impoverishing them both materially, economically, spiritually and culturally.
There would be a need to correct this imbalance and it was going to be a long and arduous task, requiring a multifaceted effort. There would be a need to re-evaluate our economic roadmap, our vision for the future. New studies in sociology and a deeper understanding of the varied people of this land would be needed. India may have to undertake complete reconstruction of her national economic and cultural infrastructure.

Tagore had realized that for a country that was colonized, this task was not going to be easy and not going to be funded by the Government. Therefore, he tried within his means, and with like minded people, to identify what could be done with limited resources and manpower, that might set a process and an example, showing the way for the future generations.  He knew India was going to be politically free one day, perhaps after he was gone.

To that end, rural reconstruction meant more to Tagore than just making a few roads, setting up a few schools, opening a few medical facilities and showing them better hygiene or ways to realize higher yield for their crop. All that was important. But to Tagore, the underlying need would be for the villages to no more feel underprivileged, and disadvantaged compared to the urban folks. The village life had to be fulfilling enough so that they can feel proud of their lives and have enough affluence so that they can have some leisure in which to engage in nourishing the rich cultural heritage of the nation, adding more folk value into our lives. The villages needed to get their dignity back and the relation between the Urban and the Rural had to be a symbiosis of equals and not one of an exploiter and exploited.
This was a work Tagore had figured would be task of the new generations to accomplish. He had no illusion that this was going to be very very hard to do, and simply copying the west was not enough. One would need all the help it could get, but one would have to find unique solutions, and create new path where none existed. Most importantly, it would need experimentation to see what works and what does not.

He found stalwarts that believed in his vision and came from near and far to join hands, some temporarily and some for their entire lives.

My grandfather, Kalimohan, was converted into this vision as a wayward teenager, and remained the worker behind Tagore’s vision on rural reconstruction till he died. Almost twenty years his junior, Kalimohan died a year before Tagore did, leaving behind a wife, six sons, and a star struck daughter of 15 that lamented his loss for the rest of her life.

Other than my mother, there was one more person that spoke to me often enough about Grand father, and that was my grand mother, Manorama Ghosh. She outlived her husband by some forty years, and spent long hours with me speaking with her when I was in my twenties and thirties. I remember most of those conversations, and intend to jot them down by and by.

Appreciate your comments or suggestions.
